Cannabis Oil vs Hemp Oil – The Differences

The differences between cannabis oil and hemp oil are few but real. It can be very confusing for the layman to understand why cannabis oil and hemp oil are so different, and why they should be taken in different ways for different ailments or health reasons. Cannabis oil and hemp oil both come from the cannabis plant BUT cannabis oil is made from the flowers and leaves of the plant while hemp oil is made from the seeds.

Cannabis Oil is Different From Hemp Oil

Hemp oil is extremely nutritional and contains the right balance of omegas 3 and 6, as well as a range of antioxidants. Hemp seeds are a good source of carotene and also contain zinc, sulfur, calcium, potssium, magnesium and iron. They are high in protein too so the oil is therefore sold in health shops as a cold-pressed vegetable oil to be used on foods and during cooking. Hemp oil contains cannabidiol (CBD) and traces of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CBD is a healing and harmless cannabinoid packed with health benefits, while THC is the psychoactive component which makes the user high (and is also a wonderful healing compound). But hemp oil contains so little THC it is negligible and has no side effects whatsoever.

Cannabis Oil Can Be CBD or THC Enriched – Different Effects

Cannabis oil, on the other hand, can either be CBD or THC enriched, or a blend of both cannabinoids. Cannabis oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers of Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. Hemp oil only comes from the seeds of Cannabis sativa. When cannabis has levels of THC higher than 0.3%, it is then called cannabis, not hemp, and the extracted oil can be used for medical and recreational purposes. THC is not legal yet in many parts of the world because it makes the user high but CBD is becoming increasingly recognised as a medical therapy, therefore is being legalised in more countries.

Cannabis Oil is an Extract But Hemp Stems Make Things

Hemp fibers are used in industry to make ropes and household items like floorboards and furnishings. The hemp cannabis plant is tall and thin and is grown in dense plantations for commercial purposes. Hemp is eco-friendly as it is not sprayed with herbicides while growing. Cannabis for the medical industry consists of shorter plants with more flowers and leaves, used to make the CBD and THC oils. It is a myth that CBD is the good oil and THC is the bad oil. THC can be used in medical cannabis products to treat cancer, chemotherapy side effects and other chronic conditions. The right blend of CBD : THC where the CBD ratio is higher, can mitigate the psychoactive effects of the THC and ensure a potent healing medication. While cannabis oil is not as nutritiously recognised as hemp oil is, it can still be dribbled over salads or eaten in other foods to get the daily dosage required to treat certain illnesses. Other ways of taking CBD include capsules, tinctures and creams which are applied topically.
