Insomnia and Cannabis Oil

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it difficult to fall asleep, to stay asleep, or it can cause you to wake up far too early and then be unable to go back to sleep. You might still feel tired when you wake up. Insomnia can affect more than just your energy levels, it can also affect your mood, health, work performance and your overall quality of life.

Insomnia Symptoms  

Insomnia symptoms may include:

  • Waking up too early
  • Waking up during the night
  • Difficulty falling asleep at night
  • Not feeling rested after a night’s sleep
  • Daytime fatigue or sleepiness
  • Difficulty remembering things, paying attention, or focusing on tasks
  • Irritability, depression or anxiety
  • Ongoing worries about sleep
  • Increased errors or accidents

Insomnia Causes 

While insomnia may be the main problem, it could also be associated with another condition.

Chronic insomnia is typically a result of stress, life events or certain habits that disrupt ones’ sleep. Treating the underlying cause can also resolve the insomnia, however sometimes it can last for years.

The most common causes of chronic insomnia include:

  • Stress.
  • Work or travel schedule.
  • Poor sleeping habits.
  •  Late night dinner or snacking.

 

Chronic insomnia could also be associated with the use of certain drugs or medical conditions. Treating the medical condition can help improve sleep quality, however the insomnia might persist even after the medical condition has improved.

Some additional causes of insomnia include:

  • Mental health disorders. Anxiety disorders like post-traumatic stress disorder can disrupt your asleep. Waking up too early can be a sign of depression. Insomnia often occurs with many other mental health disorders.
  • Medications. Many prescription drugs can affect your quality of sleep, including certain antidepressants and medications used to treat asthma and blood pressure. A large number of OTC medications like some pain medications, allergy and cold medications, and weight-loss products contain high levels of caffeine and other stimulants that can disrupt sleep.
  • Medical conditions. Medical conditions associated with insomnia include chronic pain, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Parkinson’s disease, overactive thyroid and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Sleep-related disorders. Sleep apnea causes sufferers to stop breathing at times throughout the night, which interrupts your sleep. Restless legs syndrome causes unpleasant sensations in ones legs and an almost unbearable desire to move them, which can prevent you from falling asleep at night.
  • Caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Beverages like coffee, tea, cola and other caffeinated drinks are stimulants. Drinking these types of beverages in the late afternoon or evening can refrain you from falling asleep at night. The nicotine in tobacco products is also a stimulant that has the ability to interfere with sleep. And while alcohol might help you fall asleep, it prevents you from entering deeper stages of sleep and often causes you to wake up in the middle of the night.
